Berthing Assistant System Using Reference Points

With more goods to be transported oversea, traffic and vessels’ dimensions increase while berthing areas merely remain constant thus challenge ship masters pilots maneuver in small basins with dense even bad weather situations. Too fast approaches or steep angles of attack result damages fenders, quay walls, impact the hull structure. We propose a shore-based, vessel-independent assistant system support sailors by Reference Points that are aligned quay’s meter markings identify precise location measuring distance approach speed. For this purpose, we define concept Berthing Support Area (BSA), which specifies an area which, subject constraints, safe is provided. Within there Points, perpendicular measurements at arbitrary positions, implemented set LiDAR sensors have been integrated into wall. In test campaign vessel equipped DGPS sensors, sailed seven different maneuvers evaluated precision accuracy for speed measurements.
